Low-voltage (< 48 V) bipolar stepper motor

Prized for their simplicity, high starting torque and straightforward speed control, low-voltage (< 48 V) bidirectional brushed DC motors are the dominant technology in consumer and industrial applications. Despite the growing adoption of brushless alternatives, brushed DC motors continue to offer a cost-effective solution where drive circuit simplicity and ease of control outweigh the maintenance demands of the brush-commutator interface. However, brush arcing, commutation noise and the inductive flyback spikes inherent to motor switching, place demanding requirements on the drive semiconductors and protection circuitry.

Design considerations

  • Repetitive brush commutation generates unpredictable voltage spikes – MOSFETs must be characterised for repetitive avalanche energy
  • Stall or start-up current can exceed full-load current, so drain-to-source surge current ratings must be sized accordingly
